48 The mountains of Luoshan Village in Fuli Township, Hualien County, drew architect Liu Jian-Sheng and his Japanese wife Michiko Kitamura to move here in 2017 in their pursuit of a natural lifestyle. Their dream was to create a “Sun Clover Eco-Village”. Liu Jian-Sheng said that the original idea behind establishing the eco-village was to examine the serious environmental imbalances caused by the pursuit of extreme material development and to take concrete actions to counter them. This goal was developed in response to an epiphany he had when he got a job in his twenties: he realized that he was climbing up the corporate ladder in pursuit of materialistic desires, only to become a pawn in the huge industry of globalization, which stands diametrically opposed to environmental sustainability.
